Southsea Castle

About Southsea Castle

Southsea Castle stands proudly on the southern coast of Portsmouth, Hampshire, overlooking the Solent and the Isle of Wight. Built in 1544 by Henry VIII, this historic fortification played a crucial role in defending England’s shores for centuries.

The castle’s main features include its imposing stone walls, gun platforms, and underground tunnels. Visitors can explore the keep, which houses exhibits on the castle’s history and Tudor weaponry. The rooftop offers panoramic views of the Solent, perfect for spotting ships and enjoying the sea breeze.

A unique experience at Southsea Castle is the opportunity to witness live cannon firings during special events throughout the year. The castle also boasts a micro-brewery on-site, where visitors can sample locally crafted beers.

Historically significant, Southsea Castle was part of Henry VIII’s network of coastal defences. It’s said that the king himself stood here to watch his flagship, the Mary Rose, sink in 1545. The castle continued to serve as a military installation until the 1960s.

Family-friendly activities include interactive displays, costume try-ons, and seasonal events like Easter egg hunts and Halloween spooky tours. The castle grounds provide ample space for picnics and leisurely walks.

Visitor amenities include a gift shop, café, and accessible facilities. Free parking is available nearby, and the castle is easily reached by public transport. Guided tours are offered regularly, providing in-depth insights into the castle’s rich history.

Why you should visit

I’ve been to Southsea Castle several times, and it never fails to impress. The views from the rooftop are spectacular, especially on a clear day when you can see across to the Isle of Wight. The underground tunnels are fascinating to explore, and the exhibits give a real sense of the castle’s long history. It’s a great place for a family day out, with plenty to keep both adults and children engaged. The on-site micro-brewery is a nice touch, offering a refreshing pint after a tour of the castle.
